Dr Harris, a Lib Dem MP, is spearheading the campaign to keep the legal limit for abortion at 24 weeks, despite compelling evidence that babies born at 23 weeks have a 40 per cent chance of survival. The simple truth is that the vast majority of men and women - of all faiths and none - are now deeply uncomfortable about a law that treats abortion as just another form of contraception, and that allows a doctor to fight to save a premature baby in one ward yet terminate a child of the same age in the next. Polls show that 68 per cent of people want the upper limit reduced to around the European average of 12 weeks; 60 per cent want the overall number of abortions reduced, and 80 per cent want regular reviews of the law to keep pace with medical advances. read more
