Swain County is in the process of negotiating a cash settlement with the federal government. The principal players in negotiations are the National Park Service and Swain County, but representatives from the state of North Carolina and Tennessee Valley Authority are sitting in on negotiations as parties to the original agreement. Money from the cash settlement will be held in an account by the North Carolina State Treasurer on behalf of Swain County. The Citizens for the Economic Future of Swain County needed a cold, hard dollar amount to ask for to successfully advance the cause of a cash settlement.
